A BIT OF HISTORY

Soviet Union Records was born, literally out of a cardboard box and with an account with a cassette duplicating plant in south manchester -  just at the latter end of 1993, as the high of " Madchester" ebbed away and the national record industry turned its backs and shut up shop in the city. Managers either left for bigger things or had their reputations left in tatters. Good quality cassette demo's were few and far between and recording costs were expensive or undertaken on 4-track tape recorders. From 4 track to 8 track reel to reel, the hub of Soviet Union Records was created, as a demo and limited release outlet for our bands. Each release was hand crafted and sold at gigs and circulated to A&R within the UK and abroad. Some people actually bought them. One track was accepted for a short film soundtrack and another for a mid-nineties local CD compilation.

Eventually, we entered the CD fray and a debut CD release made it out in 1997. Now Soviet Union Records works with a small roster of bands, and as an outlet, for the chairsmissing (TM) compilations, or for limited carefully packaged and chosen releases that focus on the more alternatively driven sounds of the City. Each release is for a purpose and the relationship with the artists personal and often intense.

We've already been proud to have worked with bands like Oceansize (now Beggars Banquet) and to have helped kick start the careers of bands like Moco, Jackie O, Transelement, Tsuji Giri, The Sonar Yen, Fi-Lo Radio, Amplifier and Monomania, amongst many others

For the future we guarantee that we will be discerning and will endeavour to promote those least heard and often ignored. 

MANAGEMENT

Having a relationship with a band is not the easiest of things to undertake. With a wide portfolio of activities, we carefully chose POLITBURO as the band that we wanted to be involved with. Uncompromising, strictly alternative and definitely not mainstream, POLITBURO took us back to our roots and were particularly inspiring as hardcore outsiders to the local music scene and as pure, driven anti-pop.   

ABOUT

Consider this. A nation, one of two super powers, which chose to make persecution acceptable practice. A nation which through economic sanctions, direct and indirect conflict causes untold damage to the planet and humanity. A nation which is the single biggest consumer of the earths resources and the worlds biggest polluter. A single nation that through economic control, manipulates and exhorts world markets. A nation which hosts and tolerates the biggest body bag count through lack of gun control and rampaging organised crime. A nation where a two class system has always been the norm and where access to social facilities are literally denied. Consider a nation where the election of its leader depends on a legal decision controlled by members of his own party and family. This is not the Soviet Union. For no other reason than this, we use this name. You may even be living in such a place.
