:: Motion Theory ::
14 September 2009 / Demo / 8 Trk CDR
By Emily Slowlie

Motion Theory are based in Durham but have two band members hailing from Manchester. They sound like anyone’s first band in some respects ; budget recordings and slightly under developed songs. Yet in the case of Motion Theory, a band that explore the sounds of expansive, intricate rock and melodic nu metal indie, there are many good points in their favour. Singer Dom has an impressive range and the quartet utilise keyboards, effective when stepping out into more progressive territories. I was worried at one point on Track 1 when a lovely combination of E-bow and piano sounds was almost drowned by some over eager drumming, but the song petered out quite skilfully. Technically Motion Theory are on to some really promising ideas and have the competence to see it through. Their songs need a bit of honing – Track 2 sounds like Pearl Jam but without any killer hooks – the guitar and bass work are superb. Given the raw production values on the vocals here, they shine through with that consistent skill hinted at earlier. My advice is to finely tune the best stuff on this lengthy collection, make sure they can record it well and give it the justice it deserves, whilst also getting some really appealing hit capable material together – this band have all the makings of something special indeed.

The only mark deductions here are for making this CDR too long and for not, big tut, including a track listing.
