:: Fuzzy Lights ::
01 December 2008 / Little Red Rabbit Records / 9 Trk CD
By JA

Fuzzy Lights established themselves a few years ago in Cambridge, but only now have they found a platform for their debut album. It’s worth the wait. The five piece lean heavily on the sound of a violin, but whilst this creates an original signature, Fuzzy Lights are distinctly progressive as they chew away at the borders of their song structures, with bits of feedback and the odd guitar squall. “Eastern Winds” is one long track of ambience and pulses, colliding into a wall of softly focussed noise. This kind of gently throbbing cacophony appears again later on, with “Bells Chiming In An Empty House”. Breaking from this kind of sound into a captivating refrain of guitar chords we find ourselves on “Something To Do With Light”. This provides a glimpse of the kind of stuff that Fuzzy Lights may well be influenced by – engaging, maverick post rock and distant references to epic and sonic stretching c86. It’s not until “Colour Of The Sun” that some vocals truly appear – when they do, there are hints of iLiKETRAiNS, but with that wild violin and those eccentrically brilliant guitar sparks.

As the quieter ambience of “(When We Reached The) Mountain Top” rounds itself off with softly soaring guitar echoes, it becomes clear that “A Distant Voice” is more than just something special. Fuzzy Lights have taken many aspects of progressive atmospheric alt.rock and welded them to spooky landscapes and elements of alt.folk to astounding effect.
