After last October’s EP, “On & On”, the album by Film School has been hotly anticipated, at least by all at MM towers. It doesn’t disappoint either. From the opening, radio transmitted noises of the opening 'untitled' track, you’re plunged into the great ethereal spontaneity of “On&On” , itself a splice of The Cure and Creation Records finest hours. Track after track crashes through until the brilliance factor is yanked yet even higher, with the subtle introduction found on on “Breet”. Matters then blister off at a pace, whilst recounting the very early days of New Orders “Ceremony” and the stadiumesque clean guitar posing of seminal acts like House Of Love. You can’t help feeling that Film School are actually achieving what so many bands have failed to capture, whilst attempting to wrestle with the guts of original Brit’ shoegazing.
Again it’s the Yanks who come up with the better interpretation. The minimalist “11.11” is a clockwork work out, connected by an impresively workmanlike call to arms, swathed in the glory of fuzzy washes of guitar. “Like You Know” is one of two acoustic supported tracks, but of course there’s a sky full of seamless feedback – spine tingling stuff. “P.S” closes things down with a slow rattling of laboured guitars and spaced out play-school keyboards, before providing that final conclusive eruption. Magnificent, of our time, but by no means obvious.
