:: Dartz! ::
13 February 2007 / Xtra Mile Recordings / 12 Trk CD
By JA

Teeside’s Dartz! refreshingly begin to sound their best on tracks like “A Simple Hypothetical” - this is nearest to the bands spontaneous, quick paced live outlook – a sound that was sometimes just off the mark on previous singles “Once, Twice, Again” and “St. Petersberg”. On one hand you don’t want Dartz! to sound like a heavy version of Franz Ferdinand but you want their jagged noises to provide fun sized chunks of melody. “Prego Triangolos” translates well – a stand out live track with plenty of intervening hand claps, this has all the right components tugging away at the machine gun drum breaks and off beat hi-hat crashes. “Laser Eyes” is Dartz! well on form – melodic vocals , flowing guitar riffs and a driving beat. “Fantastic Apparatus” is more like a single they haven’t yet released – powerful and overflowing with whizz kid ideas. The album ends on a high with another live hit “Teaching Me To Dance”, like the Gang Of Four on amphetamines. Midway through the singles campaign it looked as though this album could be a missed opportunity – but with substantial songs and William K.J. Anderson’s vocal lines thankfully they just couldn’t go wrong.
