Normally one warms up their vocal chords and then presses the record button. Not Dorne’s singer Dee Dee however, who seems to use opening track ‘Butterflies’ as a vocal training exercise which makes for little in the way of a tune. Her technical ability is not in doubt but unfortunately it isn’t put to great use.
Dorne aren’t helped by a backing band that sounds like a bunch of session musicians rendered apathetic by their peripheral role.
‘Vodka’ is indie-lite with sixth-form fantasy lyrics about fairies, souls and dreams. It could be Jefferson Airplane only minus the psychedelia, drugs and fun. ‘The Wonder of You’ is a stadium ballad with little to inspire.
This Is The Place’s redeeming feature is the sultry atmospheric. Sadly, atmospherics alone don’t make classic songs.
