Recorded live in Holland (April 2002) by the trio and comprising three tracks, you can see where they got the title from. If anyone knows what the ‘T Oude Pothuys Utrecht is like they can tell us, but by the sound of this it sounds like a mad Kiss audience inhabit it. Between the squeals and rush of cheers, the helium fuelled voice of frontman David Naylor is anchored to the guttural bass lines and hard rock drums. Which is good, because without them you have the vision of the whole thing flying off into the stratosphere.
The live angle has done no harm here, which a rough energy presenting plenty of appeal and with the musicianship and delivery well on par, in anyone’s game. David R Black tread a line that acknowledges commercial rock, but which also ensures there’s a filthy blend of 80’s gothic melodrama and some plain punk rock values.
Whilst the original demo “Is A Spell” was restrained and slightly over produced, this skeletal trio of songs say more about the intentions of DRB. Of the three tarcks, “Hate Me” is perhaps the more restrained but “Everything Falls Apart” and “Energy” and hi-tempo rock anthems that display the potential of the band more honestly.
If they can cross the initial demo with this live CD, they’ve got it cracked. A band that is highly recommended both live and on record (new sessions for a CD are underway already).
