British punk from the 70’s cannot take the blame for dire modern pop punk outfits with nothing but several pots of gel on their hair and the odd tattoo to their name. It’s nights like tonight that highlight the downfall and slow demise of attitudes and a lifestyle that was a complete two fingers up to society. On the surface the crowd of ex punks look respectively middle class, and the children look clueless, this is before Neville Staple walks the stage. Pulling out vibrant and lively classics like “Ghost Town” and “Message to You Rudy”, it proves great Ska is still relevant and can still make people skank like as it did the day it was released. The band sound fresh even though they look worn and slightly worse for wear, typifying it’s not only great musicianship but the energy and exigency for good times that made The Specials brilliant.
The less provocative and hostile Buzzcocks now appear mannered and refined, but only to the eye. Pete Shelly’s potbelly is no distraction from the fast, gripping songs that even now contain so much youth and haven’t changed or left the stubborn mindset they were created in. The set becomes more absorbing as the night goes on, and people get sweatier, careless and bother less with anything else except really getting into a band everyone here obviously loves. It’s a tribute to the bands place in British musical history that they can still sell out venues and get inside the people watching them. With every song it becomes more apparent the crowd might need an ambulance and not the band. The Buzzcocks make guilt free catchy tunes but stay completely true to what they believe in. So if it’s so, which everyone hopes it isn’t, that this is a goodbye tour, long may they be remembered for producing simple but honest and completely emotional songs, but most of all putting on the kind of live show that leaves people feeling energised and inspired.
