Glyn Bailey's a one of a kind. For a start, he's got a few years on most of the guitarslingers cruising the local unsigned scene - but the life experience which seeps through his songs is something you don't pick up in the students' common room. In a rich voice, bordering on a croon - think of Richard Hawley and Neil "Divine Comedy" Hannon though, as opposed to anything cheesy - this quite brilliant singer-songwriter spins sinister-edged stories of life, death, paedophilia - and yep, a topical Gary Glitter reference prefaces the latter (if you're reading this some time in the distant future, said scary glam perv was released from a Vietnamese prison earlier in the day). His real lump-in-the-throat poignant moment though comes not from any of the usual sources of such, but the dwindling band of lunar landing alumni ("Moonwalkers"). A guitarist down, this is Glyn Bailey And The (Not So) Many Splendid Things (As Usual) but the stripped-down sound works rather well. He is quite possibly crackers, but in a good way.
There are some torn-out pages of a notepad scattered around the tables bearing messages such as "Marry me tonight! Joe from The Razors 19/08/08 xxx". These could be the most low-tech flyers ever... "We play both types of music" quips the Razors' frontman "country AND western..." ah, the old ones are the best! This might be Joe, or might not - if they do have any sort of website they've made themselves pretty un-Google-able. This might be deliberate. They strike me as that sort of band. No Trade Description issues here anyway; there's a nod to Ryan Adams early on and plenty more in the sound itself - lean, tight and pacy country with just guitar bass and drums and no excess baggage. A cover of old folk standard "The Last Thing On My Mind" rattles past somewhere along the way. Said frontman's breakneck guitar picking is fantastic, topped off with a damn fine Mid-West-via-Lancashire country voice and a nice line in offbeat introductions - "We wrote this song for Daniel O'Donnell, funnily enough it didn't suit his style and stage presence..." Excellent fun.
Six months since I last saw This Is My Lawnmower, they were impressive then in a loads-of-potential way; tonight I'm watching a band who have pretty much nailed it, and that's always a good feeling. Manchester mostly stood aside during the short-lived and somewhat manufactured "New Rave" scene, this being a city that never found it unusual to have techno in one ear and guitar bands in the other anyway. Now This Is My Lawnmower along with the equally exciting Delphic are at the forefront of a new flavour of Mancunia, where influences from our illustrious history of epic indie rock are stuffed with electro beats and bleeps. TIML's speciality is boneshaking post-punk reminiscent of the early Chameleons, wired up to the National Grid and injected with a Killers way with a pop tune; elsewhere they're already showing signs of a wider outlook. New song "Closer To Home" is bleaker, reminiscent of Talk Talk with frontman Paul Rawson adding mournful trumpet lines across Paul Halpin's wintry keyboard lines. Another new one doesn't have a title and sounds like LCD soundsystem covering So Young-spec Stone Roses. "Two contrasting songs there, I think" muses Rawson afterwards. Indeed, and two bloody good ones at that. And that name? Yep, utterly ridiculous. Stick me down for a T-shirt as soon as you've got some, lads.
