FRIDAY 26th OCTOBER 2007 THE VANGUARD / BOOKSTORE THE SOUND OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION THE VANGUARD The Vanguard are an unlikely ensemble - they could be in the cast of C4’s ‘Skins’, but armed with guitars and enough guilt ridden poetry to sink even Ian McCulloch’s boat. There are no overcoats here, but there is a thick layer of 80’s urbanism, cemented by the ring of effected and delayed guitars. Their bass lines lift their songs to the realms of dimly lit stadiums, elevating them on stainless meat hooks whilst a second guitar and the drums slice away; the former with crumbled distortions and the latter with a determined mixture of solid, spine tingling thumps and cascading rolls. The Vanguard are maybe the first band to really distil both old and new with an original sense of flair and dedication...JA - MM http://www.myspace.com/thevanguardhq
BOOKSTORE ARE FROM BOLTON WE PLAY LOUD AND FAST,
SOME PEOPLE CALL US PUNK. WE ARE VERY FUCKING COOL EXCEPT THE DRUMMER HE'S A
TORY SMEGHEAD. BOOKSTORE Bookstore don’t look like they’d have got past bar room ID checks if they were punters. They’re led by a wild-haired blonde girl with tattoos, a cigarette permanently on the go and one fucker of a pair of lungs on her. Her ripped Black Flag T-shirt gives a clue where they’re coming from and it’s great to see a band who are actually performing as opposed to just playing…Cath A – MM http://www.myspace.com/bookstore
